At 12:06 AM on Saturday, 8/19, Westerly Fire received a dispatch requesting personnel to gather at Westerly State Airport and subsequently travel to Block Island in response to a 2nd alarm fire in a commercial building. A crew of five arrived on the island at 12:54 and were immediately put to work in defensive firefighting efforts. Meanwhile, additional crews remained stationed at WFD Headquarters, prepared to address any local emergencies.

Additional manpower and apparatuses were transported to the island via Coast Guard boats, Fire Department Boats, and the Block Island Ferry.

This was a remarkable response from all agencies, credited to the excellent advance planning undertaken to ready for an unfortunate occurrence such as this.

At approximately 11:35 hours, all Westerly Fire crews safely returned.
