The Westerly Fire Department, in coordination with the Rhode Island State Fire Marshal’s Office, is warning parents, students, and educators about a dangerous social media trend known as the “Chromebook Challenge.”
This challenge involves inserting objects such as paper clips or pencil lead into a laptop’s charging or USB ports. These actions can cause the device to short circuit, overheat, and in some cases, smoke or catch fire—posing serious fire and toxic smoke hazards.
🔥 Key Risks: *Potential for fire or explosion *Toxic smoke that can harm students and staff *Damage to school or personal property *Risk of serious injury
📣 What You Can Do: *Talk to your children about the dangers of this challenge *Reinforce that tampering with electronic devices is not a game *Report any suspicious behavior to school staff or local fire authorities
Let’s work together to prevent unnecessary injuries and fires. Help us share this message and keep our schools and homes safe. |
